The Steadfast Cocktail Recipe with Bourbon, Maraschino Liqueur, and Peychaud's Bitters

Steadfast… but falls a bit short…

The recipe for the Steadfast cocktail hails from “The Food You Want to Eat” by Ted Allen, though it’s an older recipe and pre-dates the book. It’s a pretty simple recipe, calling for only three main ingredients:

Combine liquid ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. Pour into a chilled cocktail coupe or into a rocks glass over ice. The garnish is either or, or both.

I found this cocktail a little one dimensional and I even used a spicier high rye bourbon in hopes the maraschino liqueur and bitters wouldn’t drown it out. It leaned a bit too hard towards the bitter end of the spectrum and despite having a sweeter bitters and the liqueur, I felt it was missing a sweet or tart element that I think could be addressed with a splash of fresh lime or even pink grapefruit juice, say about 1/4 to 1/2 oz depending on your preference.

This is a good quick cocktail that you could easily build off of and customize to your preference or use as a jumping board to make it something a bit more complex and imminently drinkable for guests.
