I’m not sure where the Italian Gentleman got it’s name, but I suppose it’s flamboyant with enough bittersweetness that one could draw lines between Mediterranean romances… or something. This one is for those that like their cocktails a bit bitter, generally Campari isn’t a 1:1 kind of cocktail ingredient but when you use a more robust or overproof bourbon that can hold its own, then you’re in for a treat. The recipe:
- 1.5 oz Bourbon [Knob Creek]
- 1.5 oz Campari
- .75 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
- .25 oz Simple Syrup
- 3 Dashes Orange Bitters [Really Horrible Orange]
Combine liquid ingredients into a shaker filled with ice, shake to combine. Strain into a cocktail coupe and garnish with a lemon wheel. For me, this is a little bitter for my tastes, I would either up the simple syrup to .5 oz or drop the Campari to 1 oz, but that’s just my personal taste. The lemon and orange really tie this together and the bourbon burn is pleasant. So whether you want to up the sweetness [simple syrup] or drop the bitterness [Campari] this one could be a great Spring or Summer sipper.
