The HG Wells Cocktail Recipe

An otherworldly cocktail.

At Whiskey Writes we love mixing our books and boozing, so whenever we come across a cocktail that pays tribute to an author it’s kind of a “must post.” H.G. Wells was one of the fathers of science fiction, giving us classics like The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and likely his most well known, War of the Worlds. I came across this namesake cocktail recipe in the New American Bartenders Handbook:

  • 2 oz Bourbon [Wild Turkey 81]
  • 1 oz Dry Vermouth [Dolin]
  • .50 oz Absinthe or Anise Liqueur [Ricards]
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters

Stir all ingredients in a mixing glass then pour into an ice filled rocks glass.

This was an interesting one where the bourbon takes a back seat, there is so much herbal and anise going on in here with the bitters, vermouth, and pastis. I would say this isn’t a cocktail for most folks unless you really like anise, though fans of chartreuse based drinks will likely enjoy it. Sadly I couldn’t find the history behind this cocktail, or its origin, but it was a fun little drink to make and try.
