This Old Fashioned Friday is a perfect way to end October, the lingering spices of WhistlePig rye, the bitter earthiness of Brooklyn Hemispherical’s Rhubarb Bitters, and light sweetness of demerara sugar. Here’s the recipe:
- 2 oz Whistle Pig Rye Whiskey
- Splash of water
- 1 Demerara Sugar Cube
- 1/4 Sleeve of Brooklyn Hemispherical Rhubarb Bitters
- Orange Peel to Garnish
Soak the sugar cube in the water and bitters, then muddle to dissolve them. Add whiskey and give it a quick couple swirls in the glass or with a spoon to combine. Twist the orange peel over the glass to release the oils, wipe the rim, and add it to your cocktail with a single large cube of ice.
The citrus on the nose is nice, but not the focus of this cocktail, the delicious earthiness of the rhubarb coats your tongue on the first sip. It’s soon followed by the tingling rye spice of the WhistlePig and both combine to leave a delicious but not overpowering taste of fall spices and simple pleasures for a finish. This is a fantastic Old Fashioned to drink year round but really finds it’s home as a fall cocktail.
