Yesterday was, what would have been, Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday. Bars around the world celebrated the legendary crooner with toasts, tributes, and of course Jack Daniels. The latter celebrated the centennial with a special edition of their already top shelf Sinatra Select by releasing the Jack Daniels Sinatra Century Edition.
I was privileged to attend a small and intimate tasting of the Sinatra Select here in Montreal at one of the top mixology outposts, Bar Le Lab. There, our local Jack Daniels ambassador ran us through the three top shelf offerings from the Tennessee distillery and their differences, the twice filtered Gentleman Jack, the super single barrel Jack Daniels, and of course the Sinatra Select edition.
The Sinatra Select sets itself apart by using an alligator char on the barrel staves and then those staves are further altered by a series of deep grooves which promotes additional interaction with the American white oak that gives the whiskey its signature colour and flavours. The Sinatra Select comes in at 90 Proof [45% ABV] while the Sinatra Century ups the ante a notch at 100 Proof [50% ABV.]
The evening started off with Bar Le Lab serving up Manhattan’s made with Jack Daniels, their house Vermouth, and Angostura bitters.
After our cocktail we all sat for a lovely educational session on Jack Daniels, their lines, processes, and a bit of history about the iconic brand. Then followed the tasting, which was free pour, of all three lines and general discussion on the tasting notes and differences. Afterwards attendees were invited to use Bar Le Lab’s stock to create cocktails featuring the Sinatra Select with the winner receiving the lovely crystal decanter in the first picture donated by local drink emporium Alambika. It was a lovely afternoon filled with lots of laughter, great music by the man himself, beautiful atmosphere in one of the best bars in town, and of course lots of delicious whiskey.
