Van Gogh, as most Frenchmen, had a love of alcohol which served as both a muse and an anchor. In his case it was most often wine and absinthe, the latter likely partially responsible for his surrealism & iconic style.
To me though, this quote, more than all his works truly speaks to me and lays the foundation to the understanding of his works and the colour blue. Laying on his deathbed, mortally wounded and dying of infection, and in impossible pain, according to his brother these were his last words; and in them I can feel the pain of an artist unable to translate his most intense feelings into a tangible form.
Cheers Vincent, to those who have felt your pain.
