The Black Hole Sun Cocktail

I’m not the biggest fan of coffee in general, but every now and again the craving hits and I’ll want something that tastes as good as coffee smells. I’ve been meaning to try cold brew coffee for a while now and the craving hit this afternoon, so I grabbed a bottle of Keep it Cool Cold Brew at lunch. Every new experience can be improved with bourbon so I dug up some cold brew cocktail recipes for #ThirstyThursday and gave the Black Hole Sun from Imbibe a whirl. Here’s the recipe:

  • 2 oz Bourbon [EH Taylor Small Batch]
  • .50 oz Cold Brew Coffee [Keep It Cool]
  • .50 oz Simple Syrup
  • 2 Dashes Orange Bitters [Beehive Bitters]
  • 1 Dash Aromatic Bitters [Angostura]
  • 1 Liberal Dash Chocolate Bitters [Dr. Reinhard’s]
  • Lemon wheel for garnish

Combine all liquid ingredients in a mixing glass, stir with ice, then strain into a rocks glass neat. Garnish with the lemon wheel.

I was quite taken aback with this cocktail, fully expecting the cold brew to overwhelm all other flavours despite it only comprising 1/6th of the ingredients. While the coffee taste was present it was light and not nearly as acidic or forward as I expected. The warmth and spice of the whiskey shined through [I used 100 Proof Taylor as a precaution but it should work well with just about any savory bourbon], the lemon was augmented by the bourbon barrel aged orange bitters, and the chocolate notes dominated the finish.

I can count on one hand the number of cups of actual coffee I’ve had in my life, but this may become my new morning routine. Forget Irish coffee, if you aren’t drinking cold brew and bourbon, you’re just not doing it right.
